sayFUSE Backup & Recovery
Cyber-Resilient Data Protection

The sayFUSE Backup solution delivers unique high-speed data protection at up to 12 TB/hour for live backups and up to 18 TB/hour for migration backups. (On your S3 object storage, you can read and write at up to 150 GB/s.)

sayFUSE Backup provides data protection, recovery, media management and offsite storage as an integrated backup and recovery platform. The aim is not just to create backups, but to ensure that data and systems can be reliably restored even after technical failures, operator errors or cyberattacks.

Multi-stage backup concept

The multi-stage backup concept begins with data being backed up to central backup/dedup storage. Backup versions are then automatically migrated within the appliance to separate backup media. Daily, weekly and monthly backups can be built up as complete backup generations and made ready for physical offsite storage.

Removablebackup media

Air gap and physical separation

A key architectural principle is the separation of the backup layers. Backup media are switched on before the backup job and, once the job is complete, switched off or removed from the production environment and stored at a protected site or in a separate fire compartment. This creates an additional layer of protection against manipulation, malware and the simultaneous loss of production and backup data.

  • Security

With sayFUSE and sayTRUST UZE, you are ideally equipped in terms of both data security and compliance with legal requirements. Our unique security concept has won over many customers in retail, industry and the public sector.

  • Speed

The all-in-one concept delivers high transfer rates without the speed-limiting components that are usually placed in between. In the event of an incident, backups and restores are completed quickly, so your operations can resume without delay.

  • Cost-efficient

sayFUSE replaces almost an entire IT environment and needs only a fraction of the space and energy. To achieve the same performance, conventional solutions install considerably more devices in the server rack. sayFUSE is also designed so that fans and power supplies can be replaced during operation if necessary. This saves downtime and expensive IT service.

  • Scalability

Thanks to capacity expansion modules, sayFUSE adapts to growing demand in your company. This provides investment security and boosts performance in no time.

The difference between sayFUSE Backup and conventional backup solutions

The difference between “sayFUSE Backup” (a SAYTEC product) and conventional backup solutions usually lies not only in the technology itself, but above all in the approach, the integration and the scope of functionality offered.

Conventional backup solutions (traditional)

Conventional backup solutions cover a broad spectrum, from simple file copies to complex systems. In general, the following characteristics can be observed:

Fragmented architecture: conventional backup solutions often consist of several separate components:

  • Storage media: these can be tape drives, external hard drives, NAS (network-attached storage) or SAN (storage area network).
  • Backup server: a dedicated server that hosts the backup software and writes the data to the storage media.
  • Media management: manual or software-controlled management of the physical storage media (e.g. moving tapes offsite).
  • Backup software: the software that controls the backup jobs and deduplicates, compresses and encrypts data.
  • Dependence on external hardware: conventional solutions often rely on separate hardware that has to be purchased, installed and maintained.
  • Complexity of installation and configuration: set-up and maintenance can be time-consuming and require specialised IT staff.
  • Manual intervention: many traditional solutions require manual intervention (e.g. changing tapes, checking backup logs).
  • Recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO): these can vary. Tape-based backups often have longer recovery times.
  • Scalability: adding storage capacity often requires purchasing and integrating new hardware.
  • Security risks: depending on the implementation, physical media can be lost or stolen. Protecting data at rest and in transit is crucial and often has to be configured manually.
  • Focus: the primary focus is often on data backup and recovery. Disaster recovery (DR) or business continuity (BC) are often separate concepts that require additional solutions.

sayFUSE Backup (by SAYTEC)

sayFUSE Backup is part of the more comprehensive sayFUSE platform, designed as an all-in-one solution for IT infrastructure. Here, the approach is much more integrated and geared towards efficiency and security:

  • All-in-one platform (hyperconverged infrastructure – HCI): sayFUSE is not just a backup solution but a complete IT platform. Backup is integrated into the hardware and software, combining the functions of servers, storage and backup in one system.
  • Integrated components: instead of separate software, servers and storage media, sayFUSE unites these components in one system. The backup hardware, the backup server and the backup and media management software are integrated into a single unit.
  • High-speed backup and recovery: sayFUSE is designed for high transfer rates and fast restores. This is achieved through its optimised internal architecture and the absence of speed-limiting components.
  • Combining the advantages of disk and tape: sayFUSE uses hard drives as backup media, offering the speed of disk backups while emulating the media handling of tape library systems, as the backup media (hard drives) are removable. This allows simple offsite storage for audit purposes or external retention.
  • Audit-proof archiving: in addition to pure backup, sayFUSE often offers functions for audit-proof archiving, which is important for compliance requirements.
  • Reduced complexity and lower hardware requirements: thanks to the all-in-one concept, sayFUSE often replaces several individual devices (server, storage system, tape library), reducing space and energy requirements as well as administrative effort.
  • Automation: the solution is designed for extensive automation, which reduces sources of manual error and simplifies operation.
  • Scalability: sayFUSE systems are often modular and can easily be scaled with expansion modules to cope with growing data volumes.
  • Business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR): as sayFUSE is a platform that can also integrate virtualisation (e.g. sayFUSE VM Backup), it aims at comprehensive business continuity – not only backing up data but also enabling the rapid recovery of entire virtual machines or server systems.
  • Patented security concept: SAYTEC emphasises a unique, patented security concept that goes beyond mere encryption and ensures data integrity and security at various levels (e.g. with “sayFUSE FIREsafe” for highly available, fire- and waterproof data mirroring).

Model variants, capacity and performance

sayFUSE Backup is available in models that can be configured to suit your needs. Combined systems provide six physical backup drives in addition to the backup and dedup storage. Dedicated backup systems have twelve backup drives. An expansion module adds a further twelve drives, so configurations with 6, 12, 18 or 24 backup drives are possible, depending on the base system.

The physical offsite storage capacity depends on the number of drives and the capacity of the sayFUSE-approved SATA media used. With 40 TB media, six drives correspond to up to 240 TB, twelve drives to up to 480 TB, 18 drives to up to 720 TB and 24 drives to up to 960 TB of gross capacity per fully populated media set. Growing SATA media capacities therefore also increase the possible offsite storage capacity without changing the fundamental library concept.

Depending on the model, configuration, media, network connection and the performance of the source and target systems, backup rates of up to 60 TB/hour and offsite transfer rates of up to 18 TB/hour are possible. Depending on the expansion level, the integrated backup and dedup storage can be scaled into the petabyte range.

From SATA hard drive to managed backup medium

Standard SATA hard drives approved for the respective system are initialised by sayFUSE when first used and thus converted into managed backup media. In the process, the system records, among other things, the serial number of the medium, the associated slot or the backup drive used, and the management information required for backup operations.
As a result, every medium and every drive remains uniquely identifiable and traceable. Backup generations can be assigned in a targeted manner, different backup jobs can run in parallel across several slots, and media for daily, weekly, monthly or annual backups can be managed in a controlled way.

Job-controlled power-off and physical offsite storage

Before a backup job starts, only the required backup drive is switched on. Once the backup is complete, it is automatically shut down and powered off. The medium can then be removed from the appliance and stored at a separate site or in another fire compartment. The combination of powered-off state, physical removal and spatial separation creates a genuine air gap. It reduces the attack surface for malware and additionally protects backups against production, online and offsite data being compromised at the same time.

Automatic spare drives

For critical backup processes, additional drives and media can be defined as spare resources. If sayFUSE detects a defect in a designated backup medium or backup drive, the backup job is automatically redirected to an available spare drive with an assigned spare medium. The backup can thus be continued or re-run without manual intervention.

The faulty drive or medium can then be replaced or repaired in a controlled manner and returned to regular operation after successful testing. The spare drive is then available as a reserve again. This means that the failure of a single component does not necessarily jeopardise the scheduled backup window.

More than a conventional backup storage system

sayFUSE does not just provide scalable storage for backup data. The platform combines backup and dedup storage, backup and recovery, a physical backup library, parallel media handling, automatic spare drives, powered-off media, air gapping and controlled offsite storage in a single system.

This reduces the need for additional systems, interfaces and manual work steps. Companies gain an end-to-end platform that supports both the backed-up data and the availability and traceability of the backup process.

Reliable data recovery and reduced complexity

By integrating several backup functions within one platform, sayFUSE reduces the number of interdependent systems and thus the complexity of the backup infrastructure. Data is not only backed up; its recoverability is permanently ensured across several separate backup layers.
